Decimal multiply and divide patterns

Multiply and divide decimals using place-value reasoning and patterns, including multiplying decimals less than 1 by whole numbers and by each other.

Multiplying decimals uses the same digits as multiplying whole numbers -- ignore the decimal points first, multiply normally, then count the total decimal places in both original numbers to place the point in the answer.

Dividing decimals often works best by first turning the divisor into a whole number, multiplying both numbers by 10 or 100 to shift the decimal point, then dividing as usual.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Multiply the whole-number version first, ignoring decimal points entirely, then count total decimal places across BOTH factors before placing the point.
  • For division, show the shift-both-numbers trick as multiplication by 1 in disguise -- multiplying both by 10/10 does not change the division answer.
  • Use an estimate to catch decimal-point placement errors: 0.6 x 0.3 should be less than either factor, since both are less than 1.
  • Watch especially for products that need a placeholder zero, like 0.2 x 0.3 = 0.06, where 2 x 3 = 6 needs an extra zero to fill two decimal places.
Talk about it:
  • How do you decide where to place the decimal point in a decimal multiplication?
  • Why does shifting both numbers by the same power of 10 not change a division answer?
  • Why can multiplying two decimals less than 1 give an answer that looks surprisingly small?

Mastery looks like: They can multiply and divide decimals accurately by using whole-number facts and correctly placing the decimal point.

Common stumbles: Miscounting total decimal places; forgetting a needed placeholder zero in the product; shifting only one number when dividing.
