Fraction times whole: of means times

Multiply a fraction by a whole number, understanding that a fraction OF a number means multiply, using repeated addition and area or number-line models.

"Of" is a math word that means multiply when it follows a fraction: "1/2 of 10" means 1/2 x 10. Finding a fraction of a whole number tells you part of that amount.

You can multiply a fraction by a whole number by multiplying the numerator by the whole number and keeping the denominator, then simplifying: 3/4 x 8 = (3 x 8) / 4 = 24/4 = 6.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Practice translating "of" to "times" out loud on several examples before computing anything.
  • Connect unit fractions (1/4 of, 1/3 of) directly to division they already know, then build up to non-unit fractions like 3/4.
  • Sketch a quick area or number-line picture for one example to make the "part of a whole amount" idea visible.
  • Always simplify the final answer, and check with an estimate -- is 3/4 of 8 close to "most of 8," so 6 makes sense?
Talk about it:
  • What does the word "of" mean in a fraction problem?
  • How does 1/4 of a number connect to dividing by 4?
  • Why does 3/4 of 8 make sense as 6 and not, say, 32?

Mastery looks like: They can find a fraction of a whole number by multiplying, connect it to division for unit fractions, and check with reasoning.

Common stumbles: Multiplying the whole number by the denominator instead of the numerator; not simplifying the final fraction.
