Checkpoint: unlike fractions with reasoning

Demonstrate fluency and reasoning across the unlike-denominator addition and subtraction unit, including mixed numbers and word problems.

This checkpoint pulls together the whole fraction-addition unit: finding common denominators, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, and solving word problems.

Being able to EXPLAIN your reasoning, not just state an answer, is just as important this week -- that is what "with reasoning" means.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Ask them to narrate their steps out loud on at least one problem -- hearing the reasoning reveals gaps a correct-looking answer might hide.
  • Mix same-denominator, unlike-denominator, and mixed-number problems in one set so they must first recognize what type of problem it is.
  • For any wrong answer, ask them to find their own mistake before pointing it out yourself.
  • Celebrate the reasoning answers as much as the numeric ones -- both are being assessed this week.
Talk about it:
  • Which type of problem is still trickiest for you: same-denominator, unlike-denominator, or mixed-number?
  • How do you decide whether you need to regroup in a subtraction?
  • Can you explain one of your answers using only words, no numbers?

Mastery looks like: They accurately add and subtract like and unlike fractions and mixed numbers, and can explain their reasoning in words.

Common stumbles: Rushing to compute without first checking whether a common denominator or regrouping is even needed; giving a correct number without being able to explain it.
