Fraction word problems

Solve real-world word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

Fraction word problems ask you to translate a real situation into an addition or subtraction, exactly like whole-number word problems -- words like "altogether," "total," "left," and "more than" are your clues.

Sketch the situation first if the numbers feel confusing; a quick picture of the whole and its parts often makes the operation obvious.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Have them circle key clue words -- total, altogether, left, more than, difference -- before writing a single number.
  • Encourage a quick bar or circle sketch of the situation whenever a story is hard to picture in their head.
  • Require the common-denominator and simplify steps every time -- word problems are not a shortcut around the mechanics.
  • Always attach the correct unit (miles, cups, feet) to the final answer, since a fraction alone does not fully answer a word problem.
Talk about it:
  • What clue words tell you to add? To subtract?
  • Why does sketching the situation sometimes help before you start computing?
  • Why does the final answer need a unit attached?

Mastery looks like: They can read a fraction word problem, choose the correct operation, compute accurately, and label the answer with the right unit.

Common stumbles: Choosing the wrong operation from a misread clue word; leaving off the unit in the final answer.
