Identify a story's theme by tracking how the main character changes from beginning to end.
A topic is a word or phrase, like "belonging" or "courage." A theme is a full sentence -- the actual lesson or idea a story is making about that topic. One of the best ways to find a theme is to watch how the main character changes: what they believe, feel, or do at the start, and how that is different by the end.
Try this method: notice how the character starts out, notice how they end up, and ask what caused the change. Whatever lesson that change points to is usually close to the story's theme.
Mastery looks like: They can state a story's theme as a full sentence and support it with how the main character changed from beginning to end.
Common stumbles: Naming a topic word ("friendship") instead of a full theme sentence; picking a theme with no evidence from the character's actual change.
