Checkpoint: addition, subtraction, and factors

Show fluent multi-digit addition and subtraction and confident factor and prime/composite knowledge.

This is a checkpoint week: a chance to prove what has become automatic from the first two units and spot anything that still needs another look. There is no new skill today.

Mix all three skills together: adding and subtracting big numbers with regrouping, and finding factors and classifying primes. Strong fourth-grade math rests on all three being solid.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix addition, subtraction, and factor questions in one warm, low-pressure sitting rather than drilling one skill at a time.
  • Watch specifically for dropped carries or an abandoned regrouping chain; those are the errors to flag for more practice.
  • Have them narrate their steps out loud on at least one problem so their thinking, not just the answer, is visible.
  • Celebrate how far the numbers have grown since week 1, from place value to full fluency with six-digit arithmetic.
Talk about it:
  • Which felt more automatic today: addition, subtraction, or factors?
  • What is your plan for the one skill that still feels shaky?
  • How do you check a subtraction answer using addition?

Mastery looks like: They add and subtract multi-digit numbers fluently with regrouping and find factors while confidently identifying primes and composites.

Common stumbles: Rushing through regrouping and dropping a carried or borrowed digit; miscounting a factor list under time pressure.
