Multi-digit addition fluency

Add multi-digit whole numbers accurately using the standard algorithm, regrouping across multiple columns.

The standard algorithm for addition lines up every number by place value and adds one column at a time, starting from the ones. Whenever a column adds up to 10 or more, write down the ones digit and carry the extra ten into the next column.

With bigger numbers you may need to carry several times in a row. Go one column at a time and you will never lose track, even across five or six digits.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Have them line up the numbers by place value on grid paper if the digit count makes lining up by hand tricky.
  • Add one column at a time, always starting at the ones place, saying the carry out loud: "write the ones, carry the ten."
  • When a carry is missed, the whole answer shifts, so check any wrong answer by re-adding one column at a time.
  • Use rounding (from last week) to estimate first and confirm the exact sum is in the right ballpark.
Talk about it:
  • Why do we always add starting from the ones place?
  • What does "carry the 1" really mean in terms of place value?
  • How can rounding each number first help you check your sum?

Mastery looks like: They add multi-digit numbers accurately using the standard algorithm, regrouping across as many columns as needed.

Common stumbles: Misaligning place values when the two numbers have different digit counts; forgetting to add a carried digit into the next column.
