Third Grade · Writing · week 9

Checkpoint: Clean Typed Paragraph

Revise and edit a typed paragraph using peer feedback and editing symbols, producing a clean, correct final copy as a unit checkpoint.

This week is a checkpoint -- a chance to bring together everything from this unit: paragraph parts, linking words, keyboarding, editing symbols, and feedback.

Start with your typed paragraph from week 7 and the feedback you received in week 8. Use editing symbols to mark every fix, then type a clean final copy.

A checkpoint is not a test with a single right answer -- it is a chance to show how much stronger your paragraph has become since the first draft.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit down together with the week 7 draft and the week 8 feedback side by side before making any changes.
  • Encourage your child to mark the draft with editing symbols first, rather than jumping straight to retyping.
  • Praise the specific improvement your child makes because of the feedback -- naming it out loud reinforces that feedback is useful.
  • Save both the rough draft and the final copy so progress is visible later in the year.
Talk about it:
  • Which wish from your feedback did you decide to act on?
  • What is one real difference between your first draft and your final copy?
  • How did using editing symbols help you make changes?

Mastery looks like: They use real feedback and editing symbols to revise a typed paragraph, producing a final copy that is measurably stronger and free of typing errors.

Common stumbles: Retyping the paragraph without truly changing anything based on the feedback; missing typing errors because the final copy was rushed.
