Third Grade · Writing · week 7

Typed Paragraph #1

Type a complete paragraph (topic sentence, three detail sentences, closing sentence) using home-row keyboarding habits.

This week you put two skills together: the paragraph parts from week 1 and the keyboarding habits from week 3. You will type your very first full paragraph.

Before you type, plan on paper first: write your topic sentence, three detail sentences, and a closing sentence. Typing goes much smoother when you already know what you want to say.

While you type, remember to return your fingers to the home row and use linking words to connect your detail sentences smoothly.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit beside your child for this first full typed paragraph -- it is a big milestone combining two skills at once.
  • Let your child plan the paragraph on paper first, and resist the urge to type it for them even if it is slow going.
  • Gently remind them to return fingers to the home row if you notice hunting-and-pecking creeping back in.
  • Praise the finished paragraph as a whole piece of work, not just a typing exercise.
Talk about it:
  • What five parts does your planned paragraph include?
  • Which part of typing this paragraph felt hardest: the ideas or the typing itself?
  • Did planning on paper first make typing easier? Why?

Mastery looks like: They independently plan and type a five-sentence paragraph with all three paragraph parts present, using home-row typing habits.

Common stumbles: Skipping the paper plan and typing whatever comes to mind, which often loses the paragraph structure; losing home-row finger placement while concentrating on ideas.
