Third Grade · Writing · week 17

Edit and Type the Final Essay

Edit the revised essay draft for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, then type a clean final copy.

Now that your ideas and order are strong, it is time to EDIT -- checking the surface details: capital letters, end marks, comma placement in compound sentences, and spelling.

Use your editing symbols from week 5 to mark every fix on your revised draft first. Then type your final clean copy, paragraph by paragraph.

Read each paragraph slowly, out loud, while editing -- your ear often catches a missing capital letter or end mark that your eyes skip right past.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit through at least one full read-aloud edit together, since hearing the essay out loud catches errors that silent reading misses.
  • Let your child do the actual marking and typing -- your job this week is a second set of eyes, not the editor.
  • Check compound sentences carefully for the comma before and/but/so from week 4.
  • Treat typing the final copy as a small celebration -- this is the finished opinion essay.
Talk about it:
  • What is the difference between what you checked last week (revising) and what you checked this week (editing)?
  • What is one error you found and fixed while editing?
  • How did reading aloud help you catch mistakes?

Mastery looks like: They independently edit their essay for capitalization, end marks, comma placement, and spelling, then produce a clean, correctly typed final copy.

Common stumbles: Confusing editing with revising and changing ideas again instead of fixing surface errors; missing comma placement in compound sentences.
