Checkpoint: main idea + morphology

Show fluency combining prefix/suffix word-attack skills with main idea, evidence, and summary skills on a mixed passage.

This is a checkpoint week -- a chance to show everything you have built: reading long words with prefixes and suffixes, finding the main idea, proving it with evidence, and summing it all up in a summary.

Passage: Rainforests are unbelievably full of life. More kinds of animals and plants live there than almost anywhere else on Earth. The thick leaves overhead form a rooftop called a canopy. Underneath, it stays warm, wet, and shady all year, which helps so many living things survive together.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this like a friendly progress check, not a test -- celebrate whichever skill feels strongest.
  • If a long word trips your child up, walk back through the prefix/suffix/blend plan from week 3.
  • Ask which unit skill (main idea, evidence, or summary) still feels shaky, and pick one to revisit together.
  • Frame this as the halfway point of a much bigger reading toolkit still to come.
Talk about it:
  • Which skill from this unit feels strongest to you: word parts, main idea, evidence, or summary?
  • What is one long word you figured out this week using the chunking plan?
  • What is something new you learned about rainforests from the passage?

Mastery looks like: They combine word-attack strategies with main idea, evidence, and summary skills accurately on a fresh nonfiction passage.

Common stumbles: Reverting to guessing at long words under pressure; blending main idea and summary into one vague sentence instead of keeping them as distinct steps.
