Read a fable and identify its moral, understanding that a moral is a specific type of theme stated directly.
A fable is a very short story, often with animal characters who act and talk like people, that ends with a clear MORAL -- a lesson stated plainly, often in one sentence. Fables have been told for thousands of years because their lessons still matter today.
Passage: All summer, an ant worked hard gathering food for winter, while a grasshopper played music and relaxed in the sun, laughing at the ant for working so much. When winter came, the ant had plenty to eat, but the grasshopper had nothing stored away and was left hungry and cold. The moral: it is wise to prepare for the future instead of only enjoying the present moment.
Mastery looks like: They identify the moral of a fable and explain how the story events led to that stated lesson.
Common stumbles: Retelling the plot instead of stating the moral; missing that a moral is usually spelled out directly, unlike an inferred theme.
