Checkpoint: summarize + use features

Show fluency combining text structures, text features, and summarizing on a mixed nonfiction passage.

This checkpoint pulls together everything from this unit: reading text features, spotting sequence, compare/contrast, or cause/effect structure, and writing a tight summary.

Heading: "Ocean Zones." The ocean has layers, like a cake. First, sunlight fills the top layer, where most sea plants and fish live. Next comes a darker, colder layer where sunlight barely reaches. Finally, the deepest layer is pitch black and freezing, but strange creatures still survive there, making their own light.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child notice the heading first and predict before reading a single sentence of the passage.
  • Ask them to name the text structure by ear -- do the signal words sound like sequence, comparison, or cause and effect?
  • Keep the final summary short -- one or two sentences, own words, no copying.
  • Celebrate this as the finish line of a whole unit on nonfiction tools.
Talk about it:
  • What text structure did this passage use, and how could you tell?
  • What is the most surprising fact you have read in this whole unit?
  • Which text feature -- heading, caption, diagram, index -- do you reach for first now?

Mastery looks like: They independently preview with text features, identify the text structure, and produce an accurate short summary of a nonfiction passage.

Common stumbles: Naming the topic instead of the text structure when asked how the passage is organized; writing a summary that is really a full retelling.
