Third Grade · Math · week 6

The ×3 facts

Master ×3 facts by building on ×2 (double, then add one more group).

The ×3 facts have a smart trick: three groups is two groups PLUS one more group. So 3 × 6 is (2 × 6) + 6 = 12 + 6 = 18. You lean on the ×2 facts you already know.

You can also skip count by 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18. Either way works — use whichever is faster for you.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Show the trick with objects: build two groups, then add a third — they SEE why it works.
  • Let them pick skip counting or the double trick; flexibility beats one forced method.
  • Keep the ×2 facts warm this week, since ×3 depends on them.
  • Celebrate that they are now reusing old facts to unlock new ones — that is real math thinking.
Talk about it:
  • How can ×2 facts help you with ×3?
  • What are two ways to find 3 × 6?
  • Which way is faster for you?

Mastery looks like: They find any ×3 fact using either skip counting or double-plus-one-group.

Common stumbles: Adding one MORE than a group (adding 1 instead of a whole group); losing the ×2 fact underneath.
