Year-end: fluency and a performance task

Demonstrate fact fluency and solve a multi-step performance task that combines skills from across the year.

Last week! First, show your fact fluency — the times tables and their divisions should feel automatic now. Then tackle a performance task: a bigger, real-world problem that uses several skills together.

A performance task is like a puzzle. Break it into steps, use the right tool for each step, label your work, and check that the final answer makes sense.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Celebrate the year — compare their fluency now to September.
  • For the performance task, coach the PLAN, not the answer: what tool for each step?
  • Require labeled steps and a final sense-check.
  • Log the task to records as a portfolio piece.
Talk about it:
  • Which facts are automatic now that were hard in fall?
  • How do you break a big task into steps?
  • How do you know your final answer is reasonable?

Mastery looks like: They show automatic fact recall and solve a multi-step task with labeled steps and a sense-check.

Common stumbles: Freezing on a big problem instead of breaking it up; skipping labels; not checking the final answer.
