Checkpoint: place and compare fractions

Place fractions on a number line and compare fractions, choosing the right strategy.

Fractions checkpoint! Show that you can place a fraction on a number line and compare two fractions with a reason. These are exactly the skills the state test checks in third grade.

Remember your toolkit: split the line into equal jumps; compare tops when bottoms match; compare part size when tops match; use models or 1/2 as a benchmark when needed.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Have them talk through strategy choice before each comparison.
  • Mix number-line placement with comparisons, like the real test does.
  • Note any fraction idea to revisit before moving on.
  • Keep the tone celebratory — this closes a big unit.
Talk about it:
  • How do you place a fraction on a line?
  • How do you pick a comparison strategy?
  • When does comparing to 1/2 help?

Mastery looks like: They place fractions accurately and compare with a correctly chosen, justified strategy.

Common stumbles: Unequal jumps on the line; defaulting to one comparison rule for every case.
