Equivalent fractions with models

Recognize simple equivalent fractions (like 1/2 = 2/4) using pictures and number lines.

Different fractions can name the SAME amount. Half of a bar and two-fourths of the same bar cover exactly the same space, so 1/2 = 2/4. They look different but they are equal.

You can find an equivalent fraction by cutting each part into the same number of smaller equal parts — more parts, but each smaller, so the total amount stays the same.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Overlay two same-size bars with different cuts so equality is visible.
  • Use the number line too — equal fractions share a point.
  • Keep it to models this year; the "multiply top and bottom" rule comes in grade 4.
  • Let them discover a few equivalents by folding paper.
Talk about it:
  • How can 1/2 and 2/4 be equal?
  • What stays the same when you make more parts?
  • Where do equal fractions land on a number line?

Mastery looks like: They recognize and justify simple equivalent fractions using models or the number line.

Common stumbles: Thinking a bigger denominator always means a bigger fraction; comparing bars of different sizes.
