Fractions of a set versus a whole

Find a unit fraction of a set of objects and connect it to division.

A fraction can describe part of ONE thing (half a pizza) or part of a GROUP (half of 8 apples). For a group, 1/4 of 8 means split the 8 into 4 equal groups and take one group.

Finding a fraction of a set is division in disguise. 1/4 of 8 is 8 ÷ 4 = 2.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use real countable objects and physically make the equal groups.
  • Say the link out loud: "a fraction of a set is division."
  • Keep totals divisible by the denominator so groups come out even.
  • Contrast "half a cookie" with "half of the cookies" so both meanings are clear.
Talk about it:
  • How is 1/4 of a group different from 1/4 of one thing?
  • What division matches 1/5 of 15?
  • Why must the groups be equal?

Mastery looks like: They find a unit fraction of a set by dividing and can explain the connection.

Common stumbles: Taking one object instead of one equal GROUP; picking totals that do not divide evenly.
