The ×6 facts

Master ×6 facts by using ×5 plus one more group.

Six groups is five groups plus one more group. So 6 × 7 = (5 × 7) + 7 = 35 + 7 = 42. You lean on the ×5 facts, which you already know cold.

You can also use double-triple, but ×5-plus-one-group is usually the fastest because ×5 is so friendly.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep ×5 facts warm as the launch pad for every ×6.
  • Write the two steps: the ×5 fact, then + one group.
  • Offer double-triple as an alternate route for kids who prefer doubling.
  • Note 6 × even is even; 6 × anything is always even — a quick check.
Talk about it:
  • How do ×5 facts help with ×6?
  • What are the two steps for 6 × 8?
  • Are ×6 answers ever odd?

Mastery looks like: They find ×6 facts using ×5 plus one group and check that the answer is even.

Common stumbles: Adding 1 instead of a whole group; losing the ×5 fact partway through.
