Division as fair sharing

Understand division as splitting a total into equal groups, and write a division sentence for a sharing situation.

Division is sharing fairly. If 12 cookies are shared equally among 3 friends, each friend gets 12 ÷ 3 = 4 cookies. The ÷ sign means "split into equal groups."

In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, the 12 is the total you started with, the 3 is how many groups you split into, and the 4 is how many landed in each group. Division undoes multiplication.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Actually deal out objects one-per-group like dealing cards — fair sharing becomes physical.
  • Say "total, split into ___ groups, ___ in each" every time to lock the meaning.
  • Connect to multiplication immediately: 15 ÷ 5 = 3 because 5 × 3 = 15.
  • Keep totals inside known facts so the concept, not the arithmetic, is the focus.
Talk about it:
  • What does the ÷ sign tell you to do?
  • In 12 ÷ 3, what is the 12? the 3?
  • How is division the opposite of multiplication?

Mastery looks like: They can model a fair-sharing story with objects and write the correct division sentence.

Common stumbles: Writing the numbers in the wrong order; not making the shares equal.
