Second Grade · Writing · week 9

Checkpoint: Organized Paragraph

Independently write a complete organized paragraph -- topic sentence, three belonging details, and a closing sentence -- on a new topic.

This week is a checkpoint: a chance to show everything you have learned about paragraphs on a brand-new topic, with as little help as possible.

There is no new trick this week. Slow down, use your checklist -- topic sentence, three details, closing sentence, and the editing checks -- and show what a strong second-grade paragraph looks like.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit back this week and let your child self-check using the checklist, only stepping in if they get truly stuck.
  • Praise the checking habit itself -- noticing and fixing their own mistake matters more than a perfect first try.
  • If a detail does not belong, ask "how does that connect to your topic sentence?" instead of pointing out the fix directly.
  • Keep a small note of which part (topic sentence, details, closing, or editing) still needs the most support, for review later.
Talk about it:
  • What five parts does your paragraph checklist ask you to check?
  • Which part came easiest this time? Which was hardest?
  • How did it feel to write a whole paragraph with less help?

Mastery looks like: They independently write a complete five-sentence organized paragraph that passes every item on the checklist.

Common stumbles: Rushing past the belonging check on details, or skipping the final capitals-end marks-commas edit.
