Second Grade · Writing · week 8

Paragraph About an Animal

Write a second organized paragraph -- topic sentence, three belonging details, and a closing sentence -- about a favorite animal.

You already built one full paragraph about your weekend. This week you build the same shape again with a new topic: a favorite animal.

The shape does not change: a grabbing topic sentence, three details that truly belong, and a closing sentence that echoes the topic idea.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child pick an animal they are genuinely curious about, even an unusual one -- real interest makes stronger details.
  • If a detail sounds like a guess, ask "how do you know that is true?" to nudge toward a real fact.
  • Read the whole five-sentence paragraph aloud and check that every detail stays on the one chosen animal.
  • Notice out loud how much more independent this paragraph felt compared to week 5's.
Talk about it:
  • Which animal did you choose, and what makes it interesting to you?
  • How is this paragraph like the one you wrote about your weekend?
  • Which detail are you most proud of, and why?

Mastery looks like: They independently write a five-sentence organized paragraph about an animal, reusing the topic-details-closing shape.

Common stumbles: Including a detail about the animal that is actually a guess rather than something true and known.
