Second Grade · Writing · week 5

Paragraph About Your Weekend

Write a complete organized paragraph -- topic sentence, three belonging details, and a closing sentence -- about a real weekend.

This week you build a whole paragraph from the parts you have practiced: one grabbing topic sentence, three details that belong, and a closing sentence. That is five sentences in all.

Pick one real thing that happened over a weekend -- a trip, a game, a chore, anything true -- and stay on that one topic the whole way through.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help your child pick ONE weekend event rather than trying to cram the whole weekend into one paragraph.
  • Read all five sentences aloud together in order and check that every detail truly belongs.
  • Let your child write with as little help as possible this week -- this is the first full assembly of every piece so far.
  • Praise the finished shape (topic, three details, closing) as a real accomplishment, not just correct sentences.
Talk about it:
  • What weekend moment did you choose to write about?
  • Which of your three details is your favorite, and why?
  • Does your closing sentence connect back to your topic sentence?

Mastery looks like: They independently write a five-sentence organized paragraph with a topic sentence, three belonging details, and a closing sentence.

Common stumbles: Trying to describe the entire weekend instead of staying on one true, specific topic.
