Revise One Story Fully

Revise a complete draft story by improving the hook, the stretched middle, dialogue, sensory details, and the ending.

This week you revise your whole small-moment story using every tool from this unit: a hook beginning, a stretched middle moment, a sprinkle of dialogue, sensory details, and an ending that lands.

Read your draft aloud first, all the way through, before changing anything. Then go tool by tool, checking whether each one is doing its best work.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Read the whole story aloud together first, all the way through, before touching a single sentence -- revising works best after hearing the whole piece.
  • Go tool by tool rather than trying to fix everything in one messy pass.
  • It is fine if not every tool needs a big change -- sometimes one is already strong and just needs a small tweak.
  • Celebrate this as the biggest revision of the year so far -- pulling together five separate skills into one polished story.
Talk about it:
  • Which tool needed the most revision, and why?
  • Which part of your story was already strong before you started revising?
  • How does your story feel different now compared to your first draft?

Mastery looks like: They revise a full small-moment draft, checking and strengthening the hook, stretched middle, dialogue, sensory details, and ending.

Common stumbles: Revising only the first sentence or two and stopping, instead of checking every tool all the way through the story.
