Strong Verbs Upgrade Pass

Revise the draft by replacing weak, overused verbs with strong, specific verbs.

This week is a verb hunt. Weak, overused verbs like "is," "has," and "goes" tell a reader something, but a strong, specific verb paints a much clearer picture.

"The fox goes through the forest" is fine. "The fox prowls through the forest" lets the reader practically see and hear it moving.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make a quick list of strong verbs together before revising (prowls, dives, soars, devours, scurries) as a word bank to pull from.
  • Turn it into a game: read a weak-verb sentence aloud and race to think of three possible upgrades.
  • Do not require every single "is" to be replaced -- some are necessary; aim for the most noticeable, liveliest opportunities.
  • Read the draft aloud before and after the upgrade pass and notice together how much livelier it sounds.
Talk about it:
  • Which weak verb did you replace, and what did you choose instead?
  • How did the sentence change once you added a stronger verb?
  • Which of your new verbs is your favorite?

Mastery looks like: They find at least two weak, overused verbs in their draft and replace them with strong, specific verbs.

Common stumbles: Choosing a "stronger" verb that no longer matches what the animal actually does, sacrificing accuracy for a fancier word.
