Second Grade · Writing · week 22

Draft: Topic + Facts + Close

Write a first draft report using a topic sentence, facts organized by group, and a closing sentence.

Now the sorted groups become an actual draft. Start with a topic sentence naming your animal, then write your facts group by group, and finish with a closing sentence.

Do not worry about perfect spelling or punctuation yet -- a first draft is about getting every fact down in a sensible order. Editing comes later.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep the sorted fact groups from last week open and visible while drafting, so nothing gets lost or forgotten.
  • Remind your child a first draft does not need to be perfect -- getting every fact onto the page in order matters most today.
  • Read each group's sentences aloud once written to check they truly connect to that group's label.
  • Save any spelling or punctuation worries for the editing week -- interrupting the draft to fix small things slows down the bigger job.
Talk about it:
  • Which group of facts was easiest to turn into sentences?
  • Does your draft follow the order of your sorted groups?
  • What is one fact you are excited is in your report?

Mastery looks like: They write a first draft report with a topic sentence, facts organized by their sorted groups, and a closing sentence.

Common stumbles: Writing facts in a random order instead of following the sorted groups from last week.
