Publish an Opinion Letter

Publish a finished opinion piece in letter format, using a comma after the greeting and after the closing.

This week your opinion becomes a real letter to a real person -- a parent, a teacher, or a friend. A letter starts with a greeting like "Dear Mom," and ends with a closing like "Sincerely, Sam."

Notice the comma: one comes right after the greeting, and one comes right after the closing word, before your name.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child pick a real reader for the letter -- an actual audience makes publishing feel meaningful.
  • Check both commas specifically: one after the greeting, one after the closing word, before the signed name.
  • Treat this like a real occasion -- a nice sheet of paper, or even mailing the letter for real.
  • Read the whole letter aloud, greeting through signature, to make sure it flows as one complete piece.
Talk about it:
  • Who did you choose to write your opinion letter to?
  • Where do the two commas go in a letter, and why there?
  • How does turning your opinion into a letter change how it feels to write?

Mastery looks like: They publish a finished opinion piece as a letter with a correctly punctuated greeting and closing.

Common stumbles: Forgetting the comma after the greeting or after the closing word, since both are easy to skip in a letter format.
