Checkpoint: R-Controlled Vowels and Teams

Show automatic, accurate reading of r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er/ir/ur) and vowel teams (oo, ou/ow, oi/oy, aw/au) without hints.

This is a checkpoint week -- no new sounds to learn. It is a chance to show how much you can already read: ar, or, er, ir, ur, oo, ou, ow, oi, oy, aw, and au, all from the last eight weeks.

Read each word cold, which means without any help first. If a word trips you up, that just shows exactly what to practice a little more.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child read each word without a hint first; only offer one after a real attempt.
  • Keep a quick mental note of which pattern, if any, needed extra support so you know what to revisit.
  • Stay warm and low-pressure -- this is a snapshot of progress, not a graded test.
  • Praise strategies you notice, like trying both oo sounds or checking where oi versus oy usually appears.
Talk about it:
  • Which pattern felt the most automatic today?
  • Was there a pattern that tripped you up?
  • How many different r-controlled and vowel-team sounds can you read now?

Mastery looks like: They read words across all the r-controlled vowels and vowel teams from this unit accurately without hints.

Common stumbles: Needing a hint on a pattern practiced many times, or guessing the wrong sound for a spelling seen before.
