Suffixes -ful and -less: Opposites

Read and understand words with the suffixes -ful ("full of") and -less ("without"), which give the same base word opposite meanings.

Two suffixes today, and they are opposites. Adding -ful means "full of" something: care plus ful makes careful, full of care. Adding -less means "without" something: care plus less makes careless, without care.

The same base word can take either ending, and the meaning flips completely. Careful and careless mean nearly opposite things.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Teach the two suffixes as an opposite pair from day one, side by side.
  • Ask for the meaning every time, not just how to read the word.
  • Find real examples together, like a helpful sibling versus acting carelessly.
  • Have your child build both forms from the same base word for practice.
Talk about it:
  • What does -ful mean? What does -less mean?
  • Can you pick a base word and add both endings?
  • What is the opposite of painful?

Mastery looks like: They read -ful and -less words fluently and explain their opposite meanings correctly.

Common stumbles: Mixing up which suffix means "full of" and which means "without."
