Long Vowels: A Fast Review

Quickly and automatically read words from last year's long-vowel patterns (silent e, vowel teams, igh, and y) before learning new patterns this year.

Last year you learned many ways to spell a long vowel sound: silent e (cape, kite, hope), vowel teams (rain, tree, boat), and igh and y (night, sky). This year builds right on top of all of that.

This week is a fast review, not a slow re-teach. The goal is to read these words quickly, without stopping to sound out every letter, so you are ready for brand-new patterns starting next week.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Time your child reading a short mixed list of long-vowel words this week just to see where things stand -- no need to write anything down.
  • If your child stalls on a word, give a quick pattern name as a hint ("that one is a vowel team") rather than sounding it out for them.
  • Do not re-teach any of the rules in depth this week; the goal is speed and confidence, not new learning.
  • Keep the pace light and quick -- read a list, celebrate, move on to something new.
Talk about it:
  • Which long-vowel spelling felt the most automatic today?
  • Which one still needed a hint?
  • Can you read a whole list of six long-vowel words without stopping?

Mastery looks like: They read a mixed list of silent-e and vowel-team words from first grade quickly and correctly, without sounding out.

Common stumbles: Slowing all the way back down to sound out a pattern already learned, instead of reading it on sight.
