Checkpoint: money and time

Demonstrate fluency counting mixed coins up to a dollar and telling time to the nearest 5 minutes.

This checkpoint mixes two units together: counting money and telling time. Both skills use skip counting, so look for that connection as you review.

Take your time with each problem instead of rushing -- checkpoints are about showing your best, steady work.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Alternate one money problem and one time problem back and forth, so neither skill gets stale.
  • If mixed coin counting is still slow, go back to sorting coins by type before adding -- that scaffold is fine to keep using.
  • If time-telling still confuses quarter-to with quarter-past, revisit the paper plate clock from a couple weeks ago.
  • This is a great week to play pretend store: price tags in cents, a toy clock showing "closing time."
Talk about it:
  • What skill helps with both counting coins and telling time?
  • Which is more solid for you right now, money or time? What would help the other one?
  • Can you set a play clock to a time I say, using quarter past or quarter to?

Mastery looks like: They count mixed coins up to $1 and tell time to the nearest 5 minutes accurately and confidently.

Common stumbles: Slowing down or freezing when problems alternate unpredictably between money and time.
