Circuits: Series, Parallel, and Power — Homework

Decide whether each part of the circuit is wired in series or in parallel before combining resistances.

  1. 1.Two resistors, 4 ohm and 6 ohm, are connected in series with a 30 V battery. Find the equivalent resistance, the current, and the voltage across each resistor.
  2. 2.Two equal 10 ohm resistors are connected in parallel. Find the equivalent resistance.
  3. 3.For the series circuit in the first problem, find the power dissipated by the 6 ohm resistor.
  4. 4.Explain why one burnt-out bulb in an old-style series string of holiday lights would darken the entire string, while a modern parallel-wired string does not have this problem.
  5. 5.Describe a real household circuit (a power strip, a string of lights, an extension cord with multiple devices) and explain whether its devices are effectively wired in series or in parallel, and why that matters.
