Vector Components and Algebraic Addition — Homework
Resolve each vector into components before combining anything.
- 1.Resolve a displacement of 50 m at 37 degrees above horizontal into its x- and y-components.
- 2.A plane's velocity has components vx = 80 m/s and vy = 60 m/s. Find the plane's speed.
- 3.Add vector A (Ax=7, Ay=0) and vector B (Bx=0, By=24) by components, and find the magnitude of the resultant.
- 4.A force is resolved into Fx = 9 N and Fy = 12 N. Without a calculator, find the magnitude of the force.
- 5.Explain what it means for a vector's component to be negative, using a vector pointing into the third quadrant (down and to the left) as your example.
- 6.Choose a real force or velocity situation at a non-90-degree angle (a kite string, a car on a hill) and describe how you would use components to combine it with a second force acting in a completely different direction.
