Conservation of Momentum: Collisions — Homework
Use a before/after momentum table for every problem, and check kinetic energy separately to classify each collision.
- 1.A 6 kg cart moving at 5 m/s collides with a stationary 2 kg cart, and they stick together. Find their common final velocity.
- 2.A 3 kg ball moving at 8 m/s hits an identical stationary 3 kg ball in a perfectly elastic collision. Find each ball's velocity afterward.
- 3.A 1 kg cart moving at 10 m/s hits a stationary 4 kg cart. Afterward, the 1 kg cart moves at -6 m/s. Find the 4 kg cart's velocity, and state whether the collision was elastic.
- 4.Find how much kinetic energy was lost in the very first problem above (the 6 kg and 2 kg carts sticking together).
- 5.Explain in words why momentum conservation applies to the system as a whole, even though each individual object's momentum changes during the collision.
- 6.Describe a real collision (a car crash, a game of billiards, two magnets snapping together) and classify it as closer to elastic or perfectly inelastic, explaining why.
