Momentum and Impulse — Homework

Keep the direction (sign) of every velocity explicit, especially for any bounce.

  1. 1.Find the momentum of a 1200 kg car moving at 25 m/s.
  2. 2.A 4 kg object at rest receives an impulse of 60 kg*m/s. Find its resulting velocity.
  3. 3.A 0.2 kg ball moving at 12 m/s bounces straight back off a wall at 9 m/s. Find the impulse delivered to the ball.
  4. 4.A 600 N force acts on an object for 0.5 s. Find the impulse delivered, and state its units.
  5. 5.Explain, using the impulse-momentum theorem, why a padded gym floor reduces injury compared to a bare concrete floor when someone falls.
  6. 6.Describe a real collision or impact (a sports tackle, a dropped phone, a car bumper) and explain how extending the impact time would change the force involved.
