Kinetic and Potential Energy — Homework

Watch your exponents -- both KE and elastic PE use a squared quantity.

  1. 1.Find the kinetic energy of a 6 kg object moving at 4 m/s.
  2. 2.A 5 kg object is lifted 6 m above the ground. Find its gravitational potential energy.
  3. 3.A spring with k = 100 N/m is compressed 0.3 m. Find the force it exerts and the elastic potential energy stored.
  4. 4.Two identical balls move at 3 m/s and 9 m/s. How many times more kinetic energy does the faster ball have?
  5. 5.Explain why the choice of reference height for gravitational potential energy (the ground, a table, a windowsill) does not affect the physics of a problem.
  6. 6.Describe a real spring or elastic object (a trampoline, a bow, a rubber band) and explain, using Hooke's law, what happens to the force and the stored energy as you stretch or compress it further.
