Oa Says Long O

Read words with the vowel team oa, which makes the long o sound.

Long o has its own team too: oa, like in "boat." Just like ai, ee, and ea, the two vowels team up to make one long sound instead of two.

Oa almost always shows up in the middle of a word, never at the very end. That is one more clue to help you spot it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Say boat, coat, and road together so your child hears the shared long o sound clearly.
  • Point out that oa lives in the middle of a word, unlike ay, which likes the end of a word.
  • Draw a quick boat and label it to connect the pattern to a real picture.
  • Mix in ai, ee, and ea words from the last two weeks so all the vowel teams stay fresh together.
Talk about it:
  • What sound does oa make?
  • Where in a word does oa usually show up?
  • Can you think of another oa word besides boat?

Mastery looks like: They read oa words with the correct long o sound and recognize the team in new words.

Common stumbles: Confusing oa with the silent-e o_e pattern and expecting an e at the end of the word.
