Ai and Ay Say Long A

Read words with the vowel teams ai and ay, two patterns that both make the long a sound.

Here is another way to make a long a sound, without any silent e at all. The team ai says long a in the middle of a word, like "rain." The team ay says long a at the end of a word, like "day."

Notice the pattern: ai shows up in the middle or start of a word, and ay usually shows up at the end. Knowing where each team lives helps you notice more patterns later on, too.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Point out that ai usually lives in the middle of a word and ay usually lives at the end -- that pattern is a useful clue to remember.
  • Read a few ai and ay words side by side so your child hears they make the exact same sound.
  • Have your child hunt for ai or ay words on a calendar (day, Monday) or in a favorite book.
  • Keep celebrating that a long a sound can be made more than one way -- that idea will come up again and again.
Talk about it:
  • Where in a word do you usually see ai? Where do you usually see ay?
  • What sound do both ai and ay make?
  • Can you find an ai or ay word somewhere nearby right now?

Mastery looks like: They read ai and ay words with the correct long a sound and notice which team tends to appear where in a word.

Common stumbles: Trying to sound out ai or ay as two separate vowel sounds instead of one long a.
