Skip count 2s and 5s

Skip count fluently by 2s and 5s starting from zero.

Skip counting means counting by jumps bigger than one. Counting by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 -- each jump adds two. Counting by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20 -- each jump adds five.

Skip counting is a fast way to count a big pile of things, like shoes (by 2s for pairs) or fingers (by 5s for each hand).

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Count real pairs by 2s (shoes, socks, mittens) and real handfuls by 5s (fingers, nickels).
  • Chant the skip count together on walks or in the car -- rhythm makes it stick.
  • Point to a hundred chart and color every 2nd or 5th number to see the pattern visually.
  • Notice out loud that counting by 5s always lands on a 0 or 5.
Talk about it:
  • What is the pattern when you skip count by 2?
  • What digit does every skip count by 5 end in?
  • Where do you see things that come in groups of 2 or 5?

Mastery looks like: They skip count fluently by 2s and 5s from zero to at least 20 or 25.

Common stumbles: Reverting to counting by ones partway through; skipping or repeating a number in the sequence.
