Leaf Collection and Rubbing

Collect different leaves and make leaf rubbings, noticing shape and vein patterns.

Leaves come in many shapes and sizes. Collect a few and make their picture with a crayon.

A leaf rubbing shows the lines inside the leaf, called veins.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Collect leaves together on a short walk before you start the craft.
  • Show your child how to hold the crayon sideways, not on its point, for a clean rubbing.
  • Talk about each leaf shape, edges, and size as you work.
  • Save the rubbings; comparing them later helps your child notice differences over time.
Talk about it:
  • Which leaf shape did you like best?
  • What are the lines inside a leaf called?
  • Were any of your leaves the exact same shape?

Mastery looks like: They can make a recognizable leaf rubbing and point out the veins on the paper.

Common stumbles: Pressing the crayon point-down instead of sideways is a common first try; showing the sideways motion once usually fixes it.
