Taste Test: Sweet, Sour, Salty

Taste small safe samples and sort them by sweet, sour, and salty.

Your tongue can taste different flavors. Sweet like a strawberry. Sour like a lemon. Salty like a pretzel.

Taste tiny bites today and sort them by flavor.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Cut very small, safe tasting samples ahead of time: something sweet, sour, and salty.
  • Let your child taste one at a time, with water to sip between tastes.
  • Ask them to guess the flavor word before you tell them.
  • Watch for allergies and choking hazards, and keep every piece tiny and soft.
Talk about it:
  • Which taste made the funniest face?
  • Which flavor is your favorite?
  • Can a food be both sweet and sour? Can you think of one?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly label at least two of the three tastes, sweet, sour, or salty, during the tasting.

Common stumbles: Confusing sour and salty is common; comparing a lemon face to a pretzel face side by side helps them feel the difference.
