Smell Jar Mystery Game

Use the sense of smell to guess familiar scents without seeing them.

Your nose can guess things even with your eyes closed. Play a smelling mystery game.

A grown-up will let you sniff a jar. Can you guess what is inside just by the smell?

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Fill three to four small jars or cups with safe, familiar smells: cinnamon, coffee, orange peel, mint.
  • Cover each one so your child cannot see inside, only smell.
  • Let them take small sniffs and guess before you reveal the answer.
  • Only use scents you know are safe, and avoid anything that could irritate a small nose.
Talk about it:
  • Which smell was easiest to guess?
  • Which smell was the trickiest?
  • What is your favorite smell in our whole house?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly guess at least one familiar scent using smell alone, with eyes closed.

Common stumbles: Peeking before guessing is common and fine to gently redirect; the goal is playful practice, not a perfect score.
