Wind: Streamers and Pinwheels

Observe and test wind using a homemade streamer or pinwheel, and understand wind as moving air.

Wind is air that is moving. You cannot see wind, but you can see what it does!

Use a streamer or pinwheel today to see the wind at work.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make a simple streamer, a ribbon taped to a stick, or a paper pinwheel together before heading outside.
  • Test it in two different spots: an open yard and a spot near a wall or tree.
  • Let your child blow on it to feel that their own breath is a tiny wind.
  • Talk about how air itself cannot be seen, only what moving air does to other things.
Talk about it:
  • Where outside was it the windiest?
  • How did your streamer or pinwheel move differently in different spots?
  • What else have you seen the wind move before?

Mastery looks like: They can explain that wind is moving air and demonstrate noticing it using a streamer or pinwheel.

Common stumbles: Believing wind itself is visible, rather than what it moves, is a common idea at this age; pointing to specific moving objects as wind clues helps clarify.
