Rain! Where Do Puddles Go?

Observe rain and puddles, and understand that puddles dry up as water evaporates.

After it rains, puddles form on the ground. A few days later, they disappear!

Where does the water go? Watch and find out.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • After a real rain, go outside together and find a puddle to observe.
  • Mark the puddle edge with chalk so you can compare its size the next day.
  • Introduce the word evaporation lightly; the idea, water rising into the air, matters more than the term.
  • Talk about wet things around the house drying, such as a washed hand or a wet towel, as smaller examples of the same idea.
Talk about it:
  • Where do you think the puddle water goes?
  • Have you seen anything else dry up like a puddle does?
  • Do you like jumping in puddles? Why?

Mastery looks like: They can say that puddles shrink over time because the water rises into the air, and can name that word as evaporation.

Common stumbles: Thinking the water just disappears with no explanation is a fine starting point; the word evaporation can come later without pressure.
