Egg to Bird: The Nest Story

Learn the life cycle of a bird from egg to hatchling, connecting back to nests from week 11.

Remember the nests you looked for? Inside real nests, baby birds start as eggs.

A mother bird sits on her eggs to keep them warm until they hatch.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look back at any nest you spotted in week 11, in person or in memory or pictures.
  • Tell the egg-to-chick story slowly, acting out sitting warmly on an egg; a balled-up sock works fine.
  • Talk about how the chick needs its parents at first, but grows up to fly on its own.
  • If you can safely observe a real nest from a distance this week, do it together.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think baby birds cannot fly right away?
  • How is a mother bird sitting on her egg like a parent taking care of a baby?
  • What do you think a chick looks like right after it hatches?

Mastery looks like: They can describe, in order, that a bird lays an egg, keeps it warm, it hatches into a chick, and parents feed the chick.

Common stumbles: Thinking the chick can fly or feed itself right away is common; comparing it to how a human baby needs care at first helps.
