Touch Textures: Rough, Smooth, Squishy

Explore and sort objects by texture, using the words rough, smooth, and squishy.

Everything you touch has a texture. Some things are rough. Some things are smooth. Some things are squishy.

Touch things around the house and find the right texture word for each one.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set out four to six objects with very different textures before you start.
  • Say the texture word every time your child touches something new.
  • Let them close their eyes and guess the texture by touch alone.
  • Sort the objects together into rough, smooth, and squishy piles.
Talk about it:
  • Which texture did you like touching best?
  • Can you find something squishy in the kitchen?
  • Do rough things and smooth things feel different under your feet too?

Mastery looks like: They can sort at least four objects correctly into rough, smooth, or squishy by touch.

Common stumbles: Confusing soft with smooth is common; soft is about squishiness and smooth is about an even surface, and it is fine to blur these a little at this age.
