Caterpillar Hunt and Butterfly Story

Learn the life cycle of a butterfly, egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly, and search for a real caterpillar.

A butterfly starts life very differently than it ends up. First it is an egg, then a caterpillar, then a butterfly.

Learn the story and go look for a real caterpillar outside.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Tell the caterpillar-to-butterfly story with your voice and hands, acting out each stage.
  • Go outside together to look for a real caterpillar on leaves, gently and without touching if you find one.
  • Use a picture book about butterflies if a real caterpillar is hard to find.
  • Emphasize how much the animal changes across its life, from tiny egg to flying butterfly.
Talk about it:
  • Which stage of the butterfly life is your favorite?
  • Why do you think a caterpillar eats so much?
  • How is a caterpillar different from a butterfly?

Mastery looks like: They can put the four stages, egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly, in the correct order.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the order of chrysalis and butterfly is common; acting out the stages in a row, in order, every time helps it stick.
