Pour, Fill, Empty: Water Words

Explore water play using the words pour, fill, and empty while comparing container sizes.

Water can be poured, and containers can be full or empty. Play and learn the words!

Fill one cup all the way up. Pour it into another cup. Watch what happens.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set up a water play station: a few different-sized cups, a pitcher, and a towel for spills.
  • Use the words full, empty, and pour constantly and naturally during play.
  • Let your child do all the pouring, spills and all.
  • Compare cups by asking which one holds more water.
Talk about it:
  • Which cup held the most water?
  • What happens when you pour water from a full cup into an empty one?
  • What was the messiest, most fun part of water play today?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly use the words full, empty, and pour during water play and compare which container holds more.

Common stumbles: Spills are part of the process, not a mistake to avoid; a towel nearby keeps the focus on learning, not on staying dry.
