Water Play: Sink or Float

Predict and test whether objects sink or float in water.

Some things float on top of water. Some things sink to the bottom. Test some!

Before you drop something in, guess what will happen.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Fill a tub or sink with water and gather four to six safe household objects.
  • Ask for a guess before every single test, out loud.
  • Test one object at a time and sort them into a sink pile and a float pile.
  • Do not worry about explaining density by name; heavy for its size is plenty for now.
Talk about it:
  • Which guess surprised you the most?
  • What is one more thing you want to test at home?
  • Did anything float that you thought would sink?

Mastery looks like: They can make a reasonable prediction and correctly sort at least four objects as sink or float after testing.

Common stumbles: Assuming big things always sink and small things always float is common; testing, not just size, is what actually tells you.
