Flowers and Their Visitors: Bees!

Observe flowers and learn how bees visit them to collect pollen and nectar.

Flowers are not just pretty. They call bees and other visitors to come by.

Bees land on flowers to drink sweet nectar and collect pollen dust.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Visit a real garden, park, or yard with flowers if you can.
  • Stand back and stay calm and quiet if a bee is nearby; model that bees are not scary if left alone.
  • Talk about how bees help flowers and plants grow more flowers.
  • If no bees are visible, look at a picture book about bees and flowers together.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think flowers have bright colors and smells?
  • How do you feel when you see a bee? Why?
  • What is your favorite kind of flower?

Mastery looks like: They can explain that bees visit flowers for nectar and pollen, and know to observe calmly without touching.

Common stumbles: Fear of bees is common and understandable; calm modeling, not touching or swatting, helps more than lecturing about safety.
